Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?
The course includes 5 modules (Chapters), including training in both academics & water skills. Students first learn at their own pace through self study. Knowledge is then tested during classroom sessions which are intermixed with skill development sessions in a swimming pool.
After the academics & water skills, you will then complete four training dives in a real diving environment. These dives can be completed with TerraMar either at a local quarry or on special group expeditions scheduled to exotic locations around the world. Or we can complete a referral for you to finish on your own vacation with any PADI instructor.
You can learn scuba in as little as 3 days. The classes are performance based. So, you move through the skills at your own pace. Through home study we can reduce your classroom time to a minimum and focus on having fun in the water. TerraMar offers you the flexibility to learn at a pace that suits your schedule and learning style.
How hard is it?
Carl is proud to say that he has a more than 99% pass rate on all the courses he has taught from beginner to assistant instructor. This is in part due to his experience. But, it is also due to good old-fashioned hard work. If you are having trouble, we will keep at it, until you are comfortable and confident in the water.
Homework? How much homework?
Homework is not overbearing. Each module requires about one hour of reading and studying. Before each class, we ask that you watch the DVD & read the appropriate chapter(s) while completing the “Knowledge Review” questions at the end.
How well do I have to be able to swim?
You should be able to swim. But you do not need to be competitive. There will be a swim test at the first pool session. But, it is easy. You only need to be able to float for 10 minutes and swim 200 yards.
How healthy do I have to be?
You must be in good general health. Students must complete a medical statement which determines if it is necessary for your physician to examine you before participation in the course. The statement can be printed here
Please complete this statement when registering. If you answer yes to any question on the form, you must see your physician before the start of class. Most people pass their physicals without any problem, even if they need to see a physician. But, the form must be completed to enroll.
How old do I have to be?
Virtually anyone who is in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can earn a PADI Open Water Diver certification. You must be older than the age of 14 to begin the PADI Open Water Diver program. For those of you who are between 10 and 14 and would like to participate in the PADI Open Water Diver Program, then the PADI Jr Open Water Diver program is available to you.
A PADI Jr Open Water Diver between the ages of 10 and 11 years may only dive with a PADI Professional, a certified parent or certified guardian to a maximum depth of 12 metres/40 feet.
What materials do I need?
Each student needs a Workbook, log book & dive table as well as a video or DVD which may be shared. You may prefer to use the CD-Rom in place of workbook/video/dvd.
What equipment do I need?
