Big Pocono State Park
, PA 19001
This is a nice hard hike down a mountain and then back up. Our guidebook says, "Tremendous views await the hiker at Big Pocono State Park from the top of Camelback Mountain. From an elevation of 2,132 feet at the edge of the Pocono Plateau, you have a fine view of the plateau to the north, the Delaware Water Gap to the southeast, and High Point, New Jersey, to the northeast. The Catskill Mountains of New York lie 84 miles to the northeast and are visible on a very clear day."
Last time I was here I stumbled upon a flock of 17 wild turkeys as well as some deer. They warn that rattle snakes are in the area. But, we have never been lucky enough to see one. Unlike many trails, this one starts at the top of the mountain and then loops around the summit dropping up and down a few times for a total elevation gain of more than 1,500 feet. So, this hike is not for the faint of heart.
Afterwards its off to a local gun range where you can learn to shoot some of the world's most exotic weapons under the watchful eye of expert instructors. Price includes shooting an three weapons as well as eye and ear protection. If that is not enough, you can chose to buy more opportunities al la cart from many other weapons including uzis, ak-47s, magnum 44s and even a custom made pistol that shoots m-16 rounds.
