Actun Tunichil Muknal

Located deep within Belize's Tapir Mountain Reserve, outside San Ignacio the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave system is the most famous cave system in Belize. Novice and experienced spelunkers will enjoy the wonders of the stalactite and stalagmite formations that grace this cave. But, the real allure of these caves is the rich history of Mayan ceremony and sacrifice.

The jungle of the reserve is rich with Belize's amazing wildlife, including the possibility of glimpsing Tapirs, Howler Monkeys, Silky Anteaters or even a Jaguar. At the cave entrance there is a short swim through crystal cave water into passages filled with cave formations. The flowstone then leads into a hidden dry chamber where you can tour long hidden sites of Mayan ceremonies.

Evidence of their rituals abounds throughout the cave system where hundreds of ancient Mayan artifacts can be found that were used in various ceremonies. Your guide will lead you through the cave while viewing and learning about cave geology, Mayan artifacts and about the rituals and ceremonies of these ancient underworlds.
